Chapter 20

S erencha?” said a dry, though feminine voice.

Ruby stopped yanking at the door. Every part of her being was telling her not to look over her shoulder, even if the person knew her last name.

“Ms. Serencha?” the woman repeated in a proper Queen’s English accent.

Swallowing, Ruby held her breath as she white-knuckled the door handle, then peeped over her shoulder. The figure stepped out of the shadows, revealing her black cloak, a clear representation of function: a nun. Standing about five feet nine, the woman was garbed in a white coif, black veil, and black robe. The veil extended out, throwing a shadow over her face. Ruby released the breath she had been holding. A nun? She had to be safe, right?

She turned to face the woman hesitantly and said with a shaky voice, “I need to use a phone.”

The nun didn’t respond. Maybe she hadn’t heard her light whisper of a voice. Ruby took a step closer, cleared her throat, and repeated herself. The woman stepped into the light and slowly lifted her chin, the light illuminating every feature of her face. Ruby sucked in a breath.

The nun’s eyes were obsidian black. Her paper-thin, ghost-white skin accentuated her diamond-cut cheekbones and long bony nose. Ruby’s eyes riveted to the nun’s mouth. Her ruby-red lips stretched inhumanely wide all the way to her chiseled cheekbones. Letting out a shriek, Ruby scurried back until she hit the door.

“Serencha?” she asked again.

Ruby found her marbles and nodded.

“I trust Jericho was welcoming?”

The nun’s words may have been welcoming, but her voice sounded strained, as if she had just been woken from a sleep. The nun turned, and although Ruby could see her feet that appeared to move at a normal gait, she seemed to glide rather than walk. Ruby had to get to a phone. She stepped forward, following the nun across a shiny bone-colored floor. She glanced around.

The interior was lavish indeed and extravagantly lit with gold-trimmed decorative sconces and crystal chandeliers. A double staircase with elaborate, carved handrails took up most of the foyer in front of her.

The nun glanced around, presumably to see if Ruby followed. As creepy as the woman was, she was a nun, and the house was clean and in exquisite condition. Ruby hoped that meant she was safe. It’s not like the beast couldn’t have eaten her at the gate. Ruby trotted to catch up to the nun who continued through the mansion.

“Is the owner of the house here?” Ruby asked.

The nun stopped on a dime, her form turning to face Ruby. Her stoic face changed to one of curiosity. “Of course,” she said dryly. The nun dropped her chin, and her hooded eyes narrowed as a sinister smile stretched her paper-thin lips. “You even know her.”

Ruby shuddered, and it wasn’t from being wet and cold. The nun proceeded, passing a grand sitting room, then a lavish dining area. The hallways were very wide, with decorative trim wood running along the center of the walls and parallel to the floor.
